{"id":297,"date":"2010-04-28T20:58:41","date_gmt":"2010-04-29T03:58:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chasingeden.com\/?p=297"},"modified":"2010-04-28T21:01:28","modified_gmt":"2010-04-29T04:01:28","slug":"ethics-vs-morals-has-goldman-sachs-done-anything-wrong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/chasingeden.com\/?p=297","title":{"rendered":"Ethics vs Morals:  Has Goldman Sachs done anything wrong?"},"content":{"rendered":"\t<p>Goldman contends they have done nothing but sell what other sophisticated investors wanted to buy.\u00a0 Did they do anything &#8220;wrong&#8221;?<\/p>\n\t<p>Hmm&#8230;&#8230;.<\/p>\n\t<p>I want to draw a distinction between ethics and morals:<\/p>\n\t<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Ethics is a set of rules, often set by a group, that defines right and wrong.\u00a0 Morals are our own personal definition of right and wrong.\u00a0 The two will hopefully be similar, but not always the same.<\/p>\n\t<p>Goldman&#8217;s claim is that they have broken no rules:<\/p>\n\t<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">They sold things others wanted to buy.<\/p>\n\t<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">They made the best profit they could.<\/p>\n\t<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">They did not break the law.<\/p>\n\t<p>If you add a bit of personal responsibility (morality) to those claims though, the statements change:<\/p>\n\t<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">They sold things others wanted to buy &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; EVEN though it was complete crap.<\/p>\n\t<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">They made the best profit they could &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; EVEN when it came at the taxpayers expense or through special connections.<\/p>\n\t<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">They did not break the law &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; EVEN though they perverted the intention of the law.<\/p>\n\t<p><strong>Goldman is basically claiming that if they didn&#8217;t break any rules, then they didn&#8217;t do anything wrong<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\t<p>When we all know that is complete crap; its a lawyer&#8217;s excuse&#8230;finding some way of weaseling out of responsibility when it is plain to everyone they&#8217;re a bunch of crooks.<\/p>\n\t<p>Not that I&#8217;m necessarily singling out Goldman.\u00a0 The &#8220;profit motive&#8221; is a ruthless amoral code; it is the economic phrasing for &#8220;the end justifies the means&#8221;.<\/p>\n\t<p>For Goldman, and many other companies, <strong>all that is not illegal is permissible<\/strong>.\u00a0 The law is something to avoid and manipulate.\u00a0 The spirit of the law is irrelevant.<\/p>\n\t<p>So, to wrap up&#8230;Yes, Goldman has done something wrong&#8230;.not breaking rules is not the same thing as doing what is right.\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Goldman contends they have done nothing but sell what other sophisticated investors wanted to buy.\u00a0 Did they do anything &#8220;wrong&#8221;?
